Yes, it's nice to have. But is there any way to turn it off or prevent it from being constantly displayed? Thanks.

Your question isn't 100% clear... are you asking to suppress the airplane icon on the map, or are you referring to the Current Loc instrument? (I suspect it's the latter.)
If it's the Current Loc instrument you wish to get rid of: you can alter which instruments are displayed, and where, by clicking/tapping on the Inst Group button at the bottom of the screen, then Customize.
