What does this instrument tell you? I’m thinking it acts like a TOD marker on the G1000.

It tells you the vertical speed (either a climb or a descent) you need to maintain to meet the altitude requirement for your next waypoint. If you don't have any altitudes set for your waypoints, then it's the vertical speed required to meet pattern altitude at your destination airport. It only appears when the vertical speed required reaches a certain threshold (by default, 350 ft/min, but that can be changed).
