While testing beta version 50, I noted a “plates” button just above the zoom in out buttons. It appears to show te available approach plates near your position. That is nice. One of the selections is “off.” When you select off the plates button disappears. Well, how do you turn it back on??

The "Plates" button is not new to the current beta software--it's been around a long time. I am aware of two conditions where it appears:
  1. You have selected a "plate" (approach chart, departure chart, airport diagram, etc.) to be overlaid on the map layer
  2. You have zoomed in on an airport that has a full-page Airport Diagram in the Chart Supplement
The "Plates" button will behave a little differently in each case. If you zoom in on a supported Airport and tap "Plates", you'll see a list of plates available for display, plus an "Other Airports" button. If you've got a plate overlaid on the base map layer and tap "Plates", you'll get some display-related options and a button for "More Plates".

Normally, if you don't have a plate overlaid and are not zoomed in on an airport, the Plates button is not visible.

However, while playing around with the Plates button, I apparently did something that made it persist, which might either be a minor bug or else intended behavior that's not very intuitive.

Yes, that is what I noticed, the persistent button. I did find the hide. Then I was trying to find a way to get it back. Like you said, after you select a plate, the button rreturns.

When you think about it, having it remain after a plate is selected is a good idea. You can easily find additional plates available without searching through the airport info.

Writing a manual for iFly, or any other app would be extensive. The intuitive approach means you are always exploring and learning.
