Why would I want to buy an iFly tablet? And what about WAAS?

Barometric set altitude is indeed what I if at all possible use in talking to ATC and reference and talk to other aircraft because as you allude for now (and foreseeable future AFAIK) that's what they're using. (I hope the day will come when we all talk GPS altitude via ADS-B, etc.) When I'm...

Why would I want to buy an iFly tablet? And what about WAAS?

Hi again, and thanks again for your thoughtful reply. No, few dozen feet laterally doesn't make any difference on any sane or even probably use of a tablet's GPS in the plane. But the altitude accuracy error as best I can find documented and from personal experience of a non-WAAS GPS is...

Why would I want to buy an iFly tablet? And what about WAAS?

Thanks Cobra… The nutshell take is useful😏. higher tolerance is important, but for my situation, not a deal maker. (if I didn’t already have a tablet and we’re starting from scratch on a purchase that could chip the balance.) I take it that AP does expect to eventually implement the interface...

Any word on the new iFly unit?

Well... that's one of several reasons to hold onto and use my 740 as long as possible.

    New Data Card for 740b

For future .once you get a new card all set up.... You may want to consider what I do/did: I cloned my original iFly SD 740's card onto a blank new same capacity SD card. I rotate the "spare" and original between the home and the plane, and update them both periodically with iFly's Windows...

Why would I want to buy an iFly tablet? And what about WAAS?

I own a 740b and an 8th generation iPad that I run iFly on. The 740 is my primary navigation device... the iPad-iFly my backup/supplement. Although I do understand some of the factors that lead to AP's decision to no further develop (and I guess eventually less support) the 740 that is...

Mount for the new iFly tablet compatible with the mount I have my 740 on?

Re the new tablet the specs say "A: The unit is larger than the 740b, and has a different type of power source. If your 740b is panel mounted you may need to make modifications to your mounting solution. For size & weight details see the Specifications Tab." My 740 mounts on the "gooseneck"...

Any word on the new iFly unit?

See https://iflygps.com/STORE/Product/ifly-efb-aviation-tablet ... just off the press. It raises for me this question: How does this dedicated(?) tablet compare to the now no longer sold iFly 740b. It's not a hypothetical question... It directly pertains to whether those of use with 740's...

Any good, bad, or interesting experiences with third-party GPS on your iPad

Hi Nitro… Short version of a long reply: When the GPS is WAAS enabled, as it is in the 740, it is incredibly accurate in reporting altitude. (as evidenced, by among other things, the following: when, on the ground at an airport it reports altitude within a few feet of the official altitude.)...

Any good, bad, or interesting experiences with third-party GPS on your iPad

With the discontinuation of the 740 I’m preparing for that inevitable day with my 740 dies and I can’t get a new one. As I mentioned in another thread, I use my iPad as my back up iFly GPS, and it is notoriously, inaccurate, reporting altitude, likely due to no built-in WAAS in its internal GPS...

Lamenting discontinuation of 740b dedicated GPS. Can you reverse that decision?

I've been iPad savvy for more than a decade. I know its strong and weak points well. two months ago I got an android phone and I’m not particularly at home, navigating its environment. in any case, the phones and tablets, iPad or android, have another significant weak point compared to the 740...

Lamenting discontinuation of 740b dedicated GPS. Can you reverse that decision?

iFly wrote recently " iFly 740b Update We have made the difficult decision to stop building new iFly 740b units. We remain fully committed to providing data services for your iFly 740b (and your 740, 720, 700, 520). All warranty repairs will be honored. And we will always be able to...
